Our Ministries

Adult Choir

St. John's Chancel Choir

St. John’s Chancel Choir welcome adults and high school students. Some of our choir members sing at the 8:30am worship service, others at 11:00am, and some choose to sing at both! This choir is conducted by Dr. Matt Caine, Director of Traditional Music, and sings a diverse body of music from various centuries, styles, and cultures. The ability to read music is a plus, but not a requirement.
Rehearsals are on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:30pm in the Choir Room. Childcare is available upon request.

Children & Youth Choirs

Joy Choir

This choir is for ages 3 through Kindergarten. These children enjoy making music together in a variety of ways and sing in worship a few times annually. Joy Choir meets from 5:00-6:00pm in Room 218/220. Directed by Alysa Smith.

Alleluia Choir

1st through 5th graders enjoy singing, as well as playing instruments and games, together as they learn more about music and prepare to sing in worship several times each year. Alleluia Choir meets on Wednesdays from 5:00-6:00pm in Room 208/210. Directed by Dr. Matt Caine.

Foundation Singers

Our choir for middle school and high school students sings a wide variety of music several times each year. They also attend Music & Worship Arts Week at Lake Junaluska. Rehearsals are Sundays from 4:00-5:00pm in the Choir Room. Directed by Dr. Matt Caine.

Instrumentals

Foundation Youth Band

The Foundation Youth Band is for 7th through 12th graders and is under the direction of Bekah Muir. The band prepares and presents a once per month worship service for the Sunday Night Youth meeting. They are also called on occasionally to lead the contemporary service in lieu of the regular 9:02 Band. Rehearsals are held on Wednesday afternoons from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.

9:02 Band

The 9:02 praise band leads music for worship in our modern service under the direction of Jane Timmerman. Although the band tends to focus on Christian Contemporary music, they will also occasionally do an old hymn, sometimes in a different manner. Members must audition and should be accomplished musicians. The 9:02 Band rehearses each Wednesday evening beginning at 7:00 pm in The Faith Center.

Chancel Bells

This multi-generational group is open to anyone in high school or older. Music reading is needed for this group as it prove far too challenging otherwise. Our Chancel Bells rehearses on Sundays from 5:00-6:00pm in the Sanctuary. Directed by Matt Caine.

About our Organs

The Schantz organ at St. John's was installed in November of 2004 and is located in the front center of the room and in the center of the balcony.

Our beautiful instrument was designed and built by hundreds of craftsmen unified in the goal of providing inspiration and beauty to God's worship. The organ was custom built for our space and provides music weekly at our two traditional services. Our landmark instrument in the CSRA is capable of accompanying solos, playing a full range of organ literature, accompanying chamber choirs, and accompanying large congregations. The instrument contains 7 divisions, 62 ranks, and 3,615 pipes. We have two consoles to control the organ: a large 3 manual console in the front, and a 2 manual antiphonal console in the balcony. The antiphonal organ is also controlled by the front console. This makes it possible for the choir to sing from the entrance to the nave or balcony without the organist having to move in between consoles.

St. John's Chapel houses a 2 manual Fritzsche pipe organ located front and center in the room. Installed in 1974, this instrument lends itself to the simple beauty of our chapel and it is used frequently in chapel services.

St. John's is proud of our organ and invite those wishing to stop by and play our instrument to contact Dr. Matt Caine, Director of Traditional Music,  or  Christopher Nash, Organist.
